Perry was born on July 25, 1968 in Chicago, Illinois to Laurie Metcalf Perry and Jeff Perry. Her first television performances were Jackie Harris on ABC's sitcom Roseanne. Her mother played her role. She was not allowed to perform with her parents till an adulthood stage, because they were concerned about the anxiety it could result in. Perry confessed that she wasn't confident in her acting during high school. She began acting to make friends at Northwestern University after switching from Boston University. Perry started her acting career in New York after graduation, landing minor parts on Law & Order: Criminal Intent. But homesickness made Perry return to California and pursue a career as a theater actress. Perry performed with her mom as part of The Other Place at Broadway, back in 2013. Kevin McKidd, her father Kevin McKidd performed in Eugene O'Neill's Pulitzer Prize-winning drama Anna Christie together with her in the year 2015. Perry played a role in 9 episodes of the ABC drama The Family in 2016. Perry was also featured in a role on ABC's political thriller Scandal along with her father. The actress also portrayed the older Mary Cooper in Young Sheldon, a CBS spin-off from The Big Bang Theory. She got the part through an open audition despite being connected to the role.
